Summer and Winter are seasons with all sorts of challenges for our community cats and kittens. If you’ve been impacted by the extremely hot temperatures we’ve had lately, know that there is an animal who feels the same heat we do too. Cats and kittens continue to face harsh conditions and there are actions we can take to make their nine lives easier.
Did you know cats actually eat less in the summer? They do! While feeding ferals is a friendly gesture, be sure not to overfeed cats. Not only do they eat less in the heat, but any leftover food can and will attract ants and other unwanted pests. Removing leftover food and water after 30 minutes will help keep your area clear of pests.
Speaking of unwanted pests, snakes and mosquitos can be a danger to any cat that spends time outside. If your cat experiences a bite from either of these, please take them to see a veterinarian immediately. If you spot a snake in an area your cat visits, leave the snake alone and remove your cat from the area. If your cat is bitten, wrap the wound with a towel and hold your cat in place to prevent the spread of venom.
These scenarios often happen when we least expect it. This usually involves incidents that happen outside normal business hours. Something you can do today is find your nearest 24/7 emergency veterinarian hospital and transfer your cat’s medical records from their regular vet. These records always help emergency veterinarians better understand your cat’s unique needs on top of their critical needs.
For anyone who is trapping ferals, be sure to never leave the trap unattended and move the covered trap into shade and inside as soon as possible.
